Purpose:   Define criteria for the tracking of musculo-skeletaltissue.

Materials:

• Facility ID Numbers
• Tissue

When allograft tissue is requested by an authorized individual,it is the responsibility of the blood bank to assure that the requestedproduct is ordered from the supplier. Autologous bone flaps are obtainedby neurosurgery and oral surgery, and the autografts are delivered to bloodbank for storage. Blood Bank staff are responsible for inventory and issue.

Inventory Entry: The tissue is placed into one of the followinggeneral product categories
 

• Staple the Facility ID number to the tissue wrapping without breaking theseal.
• There is no ABO/Rh type for these products.
• CBF and OAUTT are entered into inventory to a status of Reserved.
• Enter the lot number of the bone/tissue in alternate number field.

• Enter the patient’s name and medical record number in the Comment linein the computer
• Autograft may be discarded if the physician indicates that the graft isno longer needed or the patient is deceased.

• Allograft Tissue will be stored in the freezers with the other tested bloodcomponents.
• Bone and Tissues for the Orthopedic Service is stored in the GRAY basket.
• Bone and Tissue for other services are stored in the NAVY BLUE basket.
• Autograft Tissue is stored in the Cell Reagent Freezer (#6), bottom shelf.

• Obtain the tissue from the freezer by matching the alternative lot numberand type of tissue.
• Dispense the component to the Operating Room.
• The person returning the tissue to the blood bank will indicate if theTissue has been properly stored.
• If not properly stored, quarantine the unit and place the tissue in theCell Reagent Freezer.
