Is it necessary to test hemolysins in platelets suspended in additive solution?
Marianne Senn from the Swiss Red Cross writes: "The new policy in Switzerland is to change from platelets suspended in plasma to platelets in additive solution (f.e. InterSol® or SSP+). We used to test platelets for hemolysins before transfusing platelets from a group "O" donor to a group "A" patient. Is this still necessary with platelets suspended in additive solution? The ratio of plasma to additive solution is 35% : 65%. She was unable to find papers on this issue and wants to know whether US blood centers suspend platelets in additive solution, and whether there are blood centers with experience in pathogen inactivation with the INTERCEPT Blood System™. She adds "any comments would be appreciated".
