Orthopedic surgery and use of 'Component Concentrating Systems'
A colleague in Virginia is considering the use of a 'Component Concentrating System' in their hospital during orthopedic surgeries. This device is designed to be used for the safe and rapid preparation of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) from a small sample of blood at the patient's point of care. The PRP can be mixed with autograft and allograft bone prior to application to an orthopedic surgical site as deemed necessary by the clinical use requirements. The inquiring colleague wonders what has been the experience in other facilities with this kind of device? The inquiring colleague would like to know if there are any performance or monitoring requirements with regard to Transfusion Services in particular, or the hospital in general.
