Managing frozen blood product inventory that has not been completely tested using the most recently available donor screening technologies
A senior technologist at a medical center in a North Eastern state reports that her hospital transfusion service has over 100 blood product units with special attributes (e.g., units phenotyped for multiple RBC antigens, units from IgA deficient donors, etc) frozen in their inventory, and wonders how other institutions plan to manage such products, now that NAT for HBV testing has been recently introduced. She asks, "how are blood banks around the country managing their current inventories of such untested frozen products that may not have been tested with the recently introduced technologies?
