Factor XI Concentrates
Does any colleague have experiencve with the use of Factor XI Concentrates for patients with documented Factor XI deficiency who require neurosurgery? If so, what has that experience been, and where was the factor concentrate purchased/obtained?
The following comments have been received in response.
ADDENDA July 21, 2009
- According to Dr. Harvey Klein at the NIH (attribution used with permission), the only commercially available Factor XI concentrate is in Europe and not available in the U.S. It was undergoing Phase III trials in the U.S., when it was noted that it was produced from plasma coming out of the U. K., and therefore a risk for vCJD. The trials were suspended and the patients were informed that they had a potential exposure. Thus, at present there are no commercially available XI concentrate in the U.S., and not likely to be in the near future.
