Disinfecting skin on donors with an alcohol allergy/sensitivity
A transfusion medicine physician in San Antonio, Texas asks if anyone has a protocol for disinfecting skin on donors with an alcohol allergy/sensitivity? They recently had a patient come to their donor center and request directed donations because she had multiple allergies including an allergy to alcohol. They had to draw a type and screen from her so they used an iodine-based disinfectanct and avoided using during site preparation any alcohol preps or swabs. However, they do not currently have a method for drawing a donor with an alcohol sensitivity.
