Transfusion Trigger Trial for Functional Outcomes in Cardiovascular Patients Undergoing Surgical Hip Fracture Repair (FOCUS)

Jeffrey L. Carson, M.D., Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey (attribution used with permission) wonders if any institution would be interested in being considered as a potential study site for an NIH funded trial (called FOCUS; see http://www.focustrial.org), the goal of which is to determine if a more aggressive transfusion strategy in patients with cardiovascular disease undergoing surgery for repair of hip fracture is associated with improved functional recovery and decreased risk of adverse postoperative outcomes, including acute myocardial infarction or death. Participating hospitals should have approximately 150 hip fracture patients per year. Orthopedic Surgery currently leads most of the study sites, with other sites run by General Internal Medicine, hospitalist programs, Geriatrics, or Transfusion Services. For more details, see the information which is attached.
