Complying with AABB HPC Standard 9.1.7.2. (Cleanliness of Human Progenitor Cell Facilities)

A colleague in Michigan writes that according to the AABB HPC Standard 9.1.7.2, "the HPC and cellular product service shall ensure that the cleanliness and adequacy of facilities and environmental conditions is maintained, monitored and controlled." The inquiring colleague wonders what would be considered appropriate monitoring of environmental conditions for an HPC laboratory? At her institution they do not use a "clean room" for processing/freezing apheresis stem cells. A consultation from their Safety Office recommended that they document each cleaning, consider the number of times they might want their positive flow hood to be validated each year, and document the temperature in their room and hood. The Safety Office did not recommend particle monitoring and suggested that a periodic swab of the inside of the hood after cleaning might or might not be valuable and would add to costs. The inquiring colleague wonders what others are doing to comply with AABB HPC Standard 9.1.7.2.
