Association Bulletin #03-13
Summary of Information Regarding Intranasal Flu Vaccine (FluMist) and Recommendations on Donor Acceptability
AABB PulsePoints
The American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), on October 1, 2003, issued Association Bulletin #03-13 as a means of providing information about FluMist, an influenza vaccine that is the first nasally administered vaccine to be marketed in the United States. This Association Bulletin includes recommendations on donor acceptability.
Based on an evaluation conducted by AABB's Transfusion Transmitted Diseases (TTD) Committee as described in the Bulletin, AABB is currently recommending that donors not be deferred after receipt of FluMist™. AABB requested review of this position by personnel at the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Office of Blood Research and Review, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), and the agency has agreed with this recommendation.
A copy of Association Bulletin #03-13 is posted in the "Content/Members_Area/Association_Bulletins" section of the AABB Web site:
